Bringing your puppy home is one of the most exciting momentsābut that first week can feel like a mix of joy, adjustment, and a little bit of chaos. If you know what to expect, it becomes a lot easier (and more enjoyable).
Day 1: Everything is new
Your puppy is in a completely new environment. New smells, new people, new routinesāit can be overwhelming. Itās normal if they seem shy, sleepy, or extra clingy.
š” Tip: Keep things calm and give them time to adjust.
Sleep, sleep⦠and more sleep š¤
Puppies sleep a lot in their first week home. Donāt worry if they nap oftenāitās how they grow and recharge after all the new experiences.
š” Tip: Create a cozy, quiet space where they feel safe.
Potty training starts right away š¾
Accidents will happenāitās part of the process. Consistency is key. Take them out often, especially after eating, playing, and waking up.
š” Tip: Celebrate small winsāpositive reinforcement goes a long way.
Youāre building trust š
This week is less about perfect training and more about connection. Your puppy is learning that you are their safe place.
š” Tip: Spend time sitting with them, talking softly, and letting them come to you.
Playtime = short but important š¾
Puppies have bursts of energy, but they tire quickly. Short play sessions help with bonding and confidence.
š” Tip: Keep it light and funāno pressure, just connection.
The start of your routine š¶
Dogs thrive on routine. Feeding times, potty breaks, naps, and playtime should start becoming predictable.
š” Tip: A simple routine helps your puppy feel secure faster.
The first week isnāt about getting everything perfectāitās about getting to know each other. There may be messy moments, but there will also be quiet cuddles, little wins, and the beginning of a lifelong bond. š¾š
Take it one day at a time⦠your puppy is learning, and so are you.
š Because every great dog starts with a gentle, patient first week.
